About Pioneer Labs
Pioneer Labs engineers life to make Mars more habitable. We’re a small nonprofit research lab (501(c)(3)) that builds hardy microbes and biomaterials for the harshest environments we can find, on Mars and here on Earth. You can read more about the organization, team, and open roles at pioneer-labs.org.
This blog is where we write up what we’re doing and what we’re learning.
🧫 What you’ll find here
Methods and tools we think other people can use, from Mars media recipes to genotype:phenotype mapping approaches.
Arguments about what’s physically possible for Mars terraforming, what it would cost, and where we think the popular picture is wrong.
Lab results, including negative ones. Negative results can carry as much information as positive ones!
📏 How we write
We write for curious, technically literate readers who aren’t necessarily specialists in our subfield. Drafting a post is often where we work out what an experiment meant.

Our conception of terraforming: An Introduction to Mars Terraforming
An overview of some of our methods: What’s the best way to make a Mars Microbe?
